Russell was affectionately known as Sam to friends and family. He was born March 1944 in Erickson, MB. His family included his parents, Elsie and Cecil, with his siblings, Walter, Beat and Lyle. Cecil passed away at a young age and Elsie remarried Sam’s Step-Father Bill. They had two children, Step-Brothers, Elman and Raymond.
After finishing high school in Shoal Lake, Sam went to Brandon’s School of Nursing to study Psychiatric Nursing. During his time here, he met and started dating his future wife, Shelagh. Sam and Shelagh did everything together and were never apart for long periods of time. They were married in September 1969 and shortly after, purchased a house in Brandon. In July 1974, they welcomed their first child, Kristen. In 1975, they purchased a home in Minnedosa. A few years later, in 1977 they moved to Inglis and Sam began working at Roblin Hospital, where he worked until retiring in March 2000, creating great friendships while there. In October 1977, they welcomed their first son, Aarron. They enjoyed going to the Calgary Stampede as a family and would make it an annual trip for a few years. In December 1983, they welcomed their second son, Bryan.
In Fall 1987 they purchased an acreage just outside of Inglis. Then in Spring of 1999, they purchased a grocery store in Macnutt, SK. They enjoyed operating this store until Fall 2004.
In his spare time, Sam loved curling. In his younger days, he actively participated in the Brandon Curling League. In his senior days, curling or golf was always on the TV every time a competition was on. He also enjoyed hunting locally and cutting his own meat at their meat shop at the acreage, Ragged Ass Road.
He is survived by two of his children, Kristen and Aarron (Hannah), his older siblings, Walter, Beat and Lyle (Darlene), and his step brother Elman.
Sam is predeceased by his parents Elsie and Cecil, step father Bill, his step brother Raymond, his wife Shelagh and his youngest son Bryan.
