Michael Holunga passed away peacefully at the age of 96 at the Roblin Crocus Court on February 14th, 2019.
Michael was born on November 23, 1922 in the MacNutt District in Saskatchewan. He was the third child of 11 children, the only boy born to Nestor and Elsie (nee Savliuk) Holunga.
Michael married the love of his life, Jean Olson of Flin Flon, MB in the late 40’s. They had no family of their own; however, Angelina remembers a touching moment when they were having lunch together and a small girl walked by and Michael longed for her to have been his daughter.
From a young age, Michael was an entrepreneur. One of his first jobs was the owner of a city wide garbage collection company in Flin Flon. From there, they moved to Dawson Creek, BC where he once again owned another garbage collection company. Both had a great love for dogs; at times, their family included many different breeds. They moved again; this time is was to Taylor, BC where they bought a variety store that also had a gas station and laundry facilities. Jean and Michael ran their store hand in hand together side by side until she passed away suddenly from cancer in 1995. Everyone who knew Michael will remember him for his panning gold in the Yukon and his dreams of striking it rich. To this day, Michael still has some of his panning gold tools left there. Some of Michael’s favorite hobbies included: gardening; his sauerkraut and dills were one of a kind strong, strong garlic and headcheese. Music and dancing was another passion. He loved his guitar and country music. The faster the better; the wigging and the jigging. Time went by quickly, in 2008, he moved to Roblin Residence in Roblin as family felt he needed to be closer to his siblings.
In 2011, Michael moved to the Roblin Crocus Court. He was known for his antics at times with the workers. A heartfelt thanks to all the care workers for their love and dedication they showed towards Michael’s care.
Michael was predeased by his parents: Nestor and Elsie Holunga, his wife Jean Holunga, his sisters; Maggie (Axcel) Nylander, Nettie (Nick) Horatchka, Vera (Ralph) Nylander, Dora (Stanley) Hyshka, Georgina (Steve) Huta, Sylvia (Norman) Hyska, Sadie (Roy) Buskell and Mary (Bob) Taylor.
Surviving to mourn Michael’s death and cherish fond memories are: his sisters Carol (Bill) Robbins of Winnipeg and Angelina (Ewalt) Hubscher of Swan River as well as thirty-three nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.
