In Loving Memory of

Mary Nykolaishyn

1926 – 2011

Mary Nykolaishyn, age 85 years of Roblin, Manitoba, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 25, 2011 at Crocus Court Personal Care Home in Roblin.

Mary Marchuk was born on January 2, 1926, to parents, Dan and Dora (nee Elaschuk) Marchuk, in the Nova Zorra District, MB. She had three brothers, Harry, Mike and Metro, and two sisters, Sandra and Anne.

As a young girl, she helped on the family farm. She had a love for horses and loved to ride to check the mail. She landed in the snow bank on many occasions when she wanted to go in another direction, but her horse Topsy didn't. Topsy also refused to cross the bridge forward, so Mary always had to back her across.

Mary met the love of her life, Russell Nykolaishyn, and after courting for five years, they were married on November 21, 1945. They farmed in the Zelena District, during which time they were blessed with sons, Andy and Tony, and daughter, Eva. After their second daughter, Rose Jean, was born and passed away in 1954, they decided to move to Toronto, but after living there for about a year, they returned to the Zelena district. About a year after that, they moved to Roblin. During their time in Roblin, their son Ted was born. Some years later, they purchased the Shortdale Hi-Way Store, which they operated for three years.  From there, they purchased an acreage which held many family gatherings, and was a crossroad for many animals. After some years, they moved into Roblin. Due to progressing illness, Mary moved to Crocus Court Personal Care Home, where she spent the next five years until her passing.

Mary was an avid homemaker, wonderful cook and a lady with a green thumb for gardening. She loved her homes and kept them very neat and decorated with flowers. She was a skilled hunter, whether it was harvesting deer, or getting rid of pesky squirrels in her bird feeders, as squirrels that lost their tails found out. Her home was usually filled with the sounds of music, dancing and laughter and wonderful smells from her kitchen.

Mary was predeceased by a sister at age ll; her father, Dan in 1938 at age 52; and mother, Dora in 1965, age 79; as well as brothers, Harry, Mike (Sophie), and Metro Marchuk; sisters, Sandra (Nick) Sandaluck, and Anne (Alex) Nykyforak, and two infant grandsons.

Mary is survived by her husband of 66 years, Russell Nykolaishyn of Roblin; sons, Andy (Linda) Nykolaishyn of Strome, Alberta, Tony (Debbie) Nykolaishyn of Grand Prairie, Alberta, Ted (Fay) Nykolaishyn of Bentley, Alberta;  daughter, Eva (Ernie) Rancourt of Thompson, Manitoba; thirteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.

Mary's loving smile, kind spirit and fierce determination for life will be missed by all.

Mary’s Funeral Service was held Thursday, December 29, 2011 at 2:00 PM from the Chapel of Nairn–Chyz Funeral Home in Roblin with Pastor Randy Moffit officiating. The organist, Mrs. Laurie Moffit led the congregation in singing the hymns “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” and “Amazing Grace”. The Casket Bearers were Andy Nykolaishyn, Tony Nykolaishyn, Ted Nykolaishyn, Michael Nykolaishyn, Ernie Rancourt and Danny Nykolaishyn.

Following the Funeral Service, a Memorial Dinner was served in the Chapel of Nairn-Chyz Funeral Home.

Interment Service will be held at a later date at Roblin District Cemetery.
