In Loving Memory of

Wilfred William Mitchell

1934 – 2017

Wilfred William Mitchell passed away on Saturday, March 4th 2017 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre at the age of 82 years.

Wilfred Mitchell was born November 4, 1934 to George and Emma (nee Mohr) Mitchell.  Wilfred was the second oldest of five children. Wilfred grew up on the farm with his family in Shevlin, Manitoba.  August 9, 1957 he married his first wife Leona Jane Whiting and moved to Winnipeg.  Their marriage was blessed with one child, Allan.

Wilfred first worked for Bird’s Hill lumber in Winnipeg, delivering construction supplies but eventually started his own trucking company hauling gravel. In 1970, Wilfred graduated from the University of Manitoba with a diploma in Agriculture, and at that point the family moved to Togo where Wilf became manager of the Pioneer Grain Elevator. Over the years, through countless long hours and many sleepless nights during harvest, Wilfred increased the business 10 fold and ended his career with them by retiring in 1994.

After Leona’s passing, Wilfred married the woman he would end his days with, Helen Lydia Riffel who remained loyally by his side through his increasing health problems.

Wilfred lived a full and active life.  Some of his passions were hunting and fishing, and he had a great love of the outdoors.  He took great pride in his success in gardening, refinishing woodwork, and was an avid curler.

Wilfred is survived by his loving wife, Helen, his son Allan (Wendy) Mitchell, and his stepchildren Deb (Ken), Barb, Brent (Rhonda) and Brian (Darlene).

Wilfred also leaves behind to cherish his memory three granddaughters, Eliza (Mitch), Kelsey (David), Jessica, and eight step-grandchildren, Chad (Megan), Shawn (Angie), Shaundra, Greg (Hiroko), April (Troy) Tara, Monica, Brayden and 17 great grandchildren, as well as his sister Ruth Zimmer.

Wilfred was predeceased by his first wife Leona, his stepson Mark, his parents George and Emma (nee Mohr) Mitchell and his siblings Ernie, Richard, and Caroline.

A Visitation was held on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 from 7:00-7:30 PM in the Chapel of Nairn-Chyz Funeral Home in Roblin. A Prayer Service followed at 7:30 PM, with Cheryl Klingspon officiating.

The Funeral Service was held on Thursday, March 9 at 3:00 PM at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Roblin with Pastor Barry Wood officiating.   The organist, Debbie Funk led the congregational hymns, “Just as I am”, “Nearer My God to Thee” and “How Great Thou Art”.

The Casket Bearers- Mark Zimmer, Robin Mitchell, Braden Whiting, Earl Lang, Jessica Mitchell and Trish Read carried Wilfred to his final resting place in the Roblin District Cemetery.

Following the Interment Service, a reception was held at the Roblin 50 and Over Club, hosted by St. Matthew’s Lutheran Ladies Aid.
