Shymko, Ernest, June 6, 1929 – October 23, 2017 of Shortdale, Manitoba, entered eternal rest at the age of 88 years.

Ernest (Ernie) was born to Angus and Mary (nee Sytnick) of Shortdale, Manitoba.  In 1930, the family moved to a log house built by his father on a farm southwest of Shortdale in the R.M. of Hillsburg.  While growing up, Ernie received his education at Gilbert School and worked on the family farm with his father.  In 1951, Ernie purchased the land adjacent to the family farm where he ultimately would live and farm for the remainder of his life.

On August 23, 1957, Ernie married Catherine Hill of Scotland, Ontario.  Shortly thereafter, they moved to Ernie’s new homestead to build a life together.  The first son, Lawrence, was born in July 1958 and the second son, James, was born in September 1967.

The family farm was always Ernie’s duty and his passion.  Although in the early years he had to work on the Section, at Britcher’s sawmill, on threshing crews and other jobs where he could find them, he always returned to the farm.  He was involved in local politics for many years – both as an elected Councillor and as a ratepayer – and was heavily invested in the community.  He was very passionate about maintaining the legacy of Gilbert School and spent a lot of his own time and money to ensure that it was kept up for future generations to enjoy and for the remaining students to remember.

An avid music lover, Ernie spent many hours listening to music of all flavours, but always had an affinity for Ukrainian music.  Attending many dances and weddings over the years, he would tear up the dance floor with anyone he could convince to dance with him – which really wasn’t that hard to do.  Whether the music was a polka, waltz, schottische, kolomeyka or even the impossible “7 step”, Ernie would be on the dance floor for most of the night.  Even as he got older, he would still be able to out-dance men half his age.

Everyone who knew Ernie came to realize that he was always genuine and seldom on the fence about anything, always passionate about things most important to him and his family, and always preferred the simple things in life instead of over-complicating things too much.

Ernie was predeceased by his sister Edna in 1937, his father Angus in 1971, his mother Mary in 1976 and his wife Catherine in 2005 and brother-in-law Bill Bazylewski.

Surviving to mourn Ernie’s passing and cherish fond memories are his sons Lawrence of Shortdale, MB, James (Helen Malandrakis) of Winnipeg, MB; sister Rose of Winnipeg, MB; nephews William Jr., Patrick, Robert and Gerald (Deborah) Bazylewski, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and all those who would call him “friend”.

A personal service Celebrating the Life of Ernest Shymko was held for relatives and family on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at the Chapel of NairnChyz-Wolkowski Funeral Home, Roblin, Manitoba.  For anyone who wishes to pay their final respects to Ernie, an interment service at the Roblin District Cemetery will be held on Friday, November 10, 2017 at 1:30PM. Those so wishing may make memorial donation to the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre Foundation or to a charity of one’s choice. To leave a note of condolence, please visit Nairn-Chyzfuneralhome.com
